5 out of 5 stars Finally, we find out the secret!   August 18, 2008
Ever since 'Mandie and the Shipboard Mystery' we've been wondering why Mrs. Taft doesn't like Mr. Lindall.

It was a great book, and it was well written. The one thing I didn't like was that Mandie, a Victorian girl, tried to search a boy's ROOM. If she had been caught talking about even looking for his room, her elders would have gotten her in a heap of trouble. Victorian girls didn't think of things like that unless they wanted their reputations ruined.

Overall, it was a great book, and I'm glad we found out about Sarabeth.

5 out of 5 stars New York City !   March 26, 2008
When Mandie and her friends visit Jonathon in NYC they reveal the mystery that Mandie has been wanting to solve - her grandmother's love story , of course ! Will Mandie find out what happened between her grandmother and Jonathon's father ? Find out exactly what takes place in the new york secret .

I would definitely say that this book has a great story . And I loved the suspense and captivating moments . With the great detail of NYC back in the early 1900s , I could actually picture everything perfectly in my mind . What did happen to Polly in this book ? But I must admit that I am glad she wasn't there to spoil Mandie's time . I gladly give you , Mrs.Leppard , all five stars .

5 out of 5 stars A charming addition to the series that will not remain a secret for long!   February 6, 2007

It is June of 1903. Mandie Shaw's fifteenth birthday is just a few days away, but news from her friend Jonathan Guyer regarding a suspicious secret has pushed party plans into the back of her mind, and has her brain reeling in anticipation of the mysterious wire Jonathan sent her while she was visiting her Cherokee kinpeople. However, when Mandie, along with Joe and Celia arrive at Jonathan's mansion in New York City, they quickly discover that he is stranded in Long Island, and won't be home for a couple of extra days. Celia and Joe seem satisfied with waiting for Jonathan's arrival, but Mandie has extremely different plans. She can't seem to concentrate on anything other than Jonathan's mysterious words, and is determined to discover the secret before Jonathan even returns to the mansion. But Grandmother won't give Mandie a moment to rest. If she's not out shopping for trunks, and practical shoes, she's out dining in fancy cafes. And, while she adores the many pieces of chocolate cake she has had the opportunity to savor, she can't help but feel that cake is nowhere near as important as the secret at hand. But Mandie has not given up hope. When she sees everyone within the Guyers' household drift off to sleep at night, she promptly creeps through the hallways, attempting to uncover the mystery surrounding her. Unfortunately, the only thing she encounters is confusion. The mansion is so large, that Mandie can rarely find her way between her assigned room, the parlor, and the kitchen. Now, seeing that Mandie will not let her mind rest, Joe and Celia have begun to conspire to keep Mandie's patience strong, so she can enjoy her trip to New York, and wait for Jonathan's return to begin snooping around once again. But when it comes to Mandie, keeping her inquisitive mind under wraps can often be a bigger challenge than one would expect.

I haven't read a MANDIE book in years. However, when I spotted MANDIE AND THE NEW YORK SECRET sitting upon the shelf at Barnes & Noble recently, I instantly snatched it up. Luckily, while I haven't read the entire series, I was able to keep up with exactly what was going on in the storyline, and I absolutely adored the plot. Lois Gladys Leppard has done a remarkable job of keeping Mandie's lovable, vivacious, inquisitive, kind personality alive. The fire that burns in her eyes (and her mind) when she is faced with any situation - harsh, confusing, or even downright weird - is absolutely addicting; while her communications, and interactions with various secondary characters, from Joe and Celia, to the many adults that grace these pages, are extremely interesting. Mandie is a character who is absolutely impossible to resist. And the same goes for the chocolate cake-addict, Joe; and the oft-times wary best friend, Celia. As a native New Yorker, the backdrop of this particular addition was absolutely amazing. The talk of carriages riding through the streets, and quaint cafes lining the sidewalks were charming, as were the discussions about the various shopping trips that each character had to endure at least once. Leppard has outdone herself with MANDIE AND THE NEW YORK SECRET, and instilled my love for her characters once more. A charming addition to the series that will not remain a secret for long!

This book is about when Mandie, Celia, Joe, and Mrs. Taft go to see Jonathan in New York. He has sent Mandie a note telling her that he has found a mystery. But he and his family have gone to Long Island. She has to wait to find out what it is about, and if you know Mandie you'll know how she feels!!
I think it was very iteresting how Jonathan's father and Mrs. Taft broke up. I mean, why would Mandie's grandmother care so much about the painting..... Anyway, this book was really good! I would reccomend it to everyone!!
