Product Description When a poor devout widow begs for a scrap of bread from a rich faithless baker, she promises to participate in the king's wedding mass as payment for the baker's generosity. The baker writes "One Mass" on a scrap of paper and places it on his scale to determine how much bread it is worth. To his and the entire town's surprise, nothing in the shop, not even the gigantic wedding cakes made for the king, outweighs the simple piece of paper representing the true worth of a mass. Luminous old-world watercolor paintings grace the interior of the book and gold foil artwork lends an air of solemnity and sacred beauty to the story.

This is one of the finest children's books I have encountered in a long time. The story is one that speaks to parents and grandparents as much as it does to children. It is a story of a time of lost faith challenged by the ancient faith of our fathers. In the end we are drawn back to a new appreciation and love for the Mass. Very highly recommended.
Folk tale or true story - doesn't change the message December 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Weight of A Mass is a tale about how the value of Mass compares to the value of the things we require to meet our basic needs. It is good for all ages because even though it is a children's book, the story is revelatory to all about how Mass meets needs in ways we can't imagine.
Beautiful in its simplicity October 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I enjoyed sharing this book with our children. The story spoke to them in ways their father and I haven't been able to. Thank you.

My children received this book as a gift, and our 5 and 3 year olds really enjoy the story. The illustrations are very well-done, and the story is beautiful.
"Outweighing" life's finer things January 2, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This well-written tale, reportedly based on a true story, demonstrates to young children how the Mass ought to "outweigh" life's supposedly finer things -- in this case the delicacies of a baker. As others have observed it is beautifully illustrated by Katalin Szegedi; her watercolor drawings help children develop an early appreciation for the three transcendentals: Truth, Goodness, and Beauty. The book takes about seven minutes to read, so it's perfect for reading to young children (7 and under.) "The Weight of a Mass" deserves the fine praise it has received here and elsewhere, and it makes one look forward to other titles by the publisher Gingerbread House. Highly recommended.
