Amazon.com Review
Knowing God does not come through a program, a study, or a method. Knowing God comes through a relationship with a Person. This is an intimate love relationship with God. Through this relationship, God reveals Himself, His purposes, and His ways; and He invites you to join Him where He is already at work. This is the central thesis of Experiencing God by Henry T. Blackaby and Claude V. King. The authors' emphasis on revelation through personal relationship makes faith sound like a true adventure--leading believers to engage with people and circumstances they might otherwise have avoided. The organization of Experiencing God adds to this effect, proceeding step by step through the various ways a believer's relationship with God is deepened (via the Bible, prayer, and the Church, among others). Although there's strong tension between the self-help tone of this book and its hard-line argument that faith is purely a response to God's initiative, many readers will nevertheless find great encouragement in hearing a still, small voice among a vast number of everyday experiences.

  Experiencing Assumptions December 31, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
While many Christians today will be surprised to hear this, the very idea that God has a personal will for your life separate from His Sovereign or His Moral will is not uncontested. Blackaby simply assumes that his readers already agree with this view without giving any evidence for it (nor even bothering to state it). This assumption has gone unnoticed by most Christians, for this view of God's will is prevalent among evangelical churches. But the fact is that the idea of God having an individual will for every believer that can be known in advance may not be true. Blackaby's further assumptions (such as God's means of communication) are themselves based on this questionable premise. This opens the door for questioning not only Blackaby's methodology, but the most fundamental aspect of his teaching.
Further, "Experienceing God" promotes a dangerous view of God's methods (does God speak today like He spoke then? And to whom?); a dangerous view of the Christian Life (does the Bible always portray the believer's life like Moses' or Abraham's?); a dangerous view of Scripture (are only parts of the Bible God's word for us?); and a dangerous view of Christ - (did Christ have crisis of faith or make major adjustments for the Father?). These are all expanded upon here: [..] In light of the very questionable and unsupported assumptions Blackaby relies on for his whole system, the objectively false philosophy he espouses, the confusing and sometimes contradictory methodology he supports, the dangerous consequences that many of his principles could lead to, and the impossibly subjective and circular means of verification that the system is tested by, it is my conclusion that Experiencing God should not be taught as a means for discovering God's will today (although it would be useful as a resource for learning how God spoke to unique men and women in Biblical times in order that they might fulfill their truly "God sized" assignments).
The New Testament does not teach that Christians must try to figure out where God is at work around them so that they can join Him. We already know God's will for us in this regard, we already have our "marching orders":
* Preach the gospel (2 Timothy 4:2) * Defend the faith (1 Peter 3:15) * Disciple the nations ( Matthew 28:19-20)
God is at work wherever we are - what are we waiting for?
  A Life-Changing Study December 1, 2008 The best study I've gone through yet! No, it's not easy. Yes, it will challenge the meaning of your relationship. You will look at faith and the church differently and hopefully, with more convction than ever. Worth every moment of time you put into it.
  The Jumpstart I needed October 24, 2008 Experiencing God has been a great ride. I've really drawn closer to God through the experience. The key to the book is to not read it but to work through it. Take it at your own pace, my pace was a chapter a day to augment my time with God. The book is not a wordy scholarly read but more of a workbook where Henry Blackaby asks some tough personal questions that we often think about but rarely answer with honest hearts. The whole idea behind Experiencing God is to find out how to interact with God and how he interacts with you.
  experiencing God September 15, 2008 excellent book, very informative, inspiring and easily understood. excellent book for believers and unbelievers.
thank you

  A MUST READ FOR CHRISTIANS June 12, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Conservative evangels have misdirected the development of Christian Faith by gimmicks, acronyms, and rigid doctrine. Henry directs us back to the basics of developing our own faith and nurturing others through experience. IT IS A MUST READ !
