When Helena overhears her father?s secret plans to invade Merclif Castle and murder her and Alaric on their wedding night, she knows she must tell Alaric. But can she trust him? And if he stops the plot, will he annul their forced marriage?her only chance to get away from her abusive father? Very entertaining and well-written January 5, 2009 I don't usually read romance-type books, but this book made a very long plane ride seem short. There are aspects of human behavior that remain constant across different time periods and cultures, so fiction set in another place or time can still be compelling, if the behavior of the characters is realistic. Even though this book takes place in 12th century England, the characters seemed real and that drew me into the story, so that I forgot I was sitting on a plane reading a book. As the story progressed, I started to have a deeper understanding of Alaric and Helena's personalities (as well as the other main characters.) The further into the book I got, the more I liked it. The story features enough political intrigue and action that even though I am not a fan of romantic novels, I still thoroughly enjoyed the book.
