A good intro for people learning November 23, 2008 I got this book specifically for my military chaplain so he can understand the different faiths in the religion.
You should read this book!! September 29, 2008 I must say this is a great book! I found it very detailed and sometimes overwhelming in certain sections. It is thorough and very helpful and it should be your first read if wanting to learn more about paganism or if you want to be pagan. I liked the way they don't try to sway you either way on paganism. It is very philosophical which I am not much into philosophy so it was a bit difficult for me to connect with at times but I just kept reading. Overall it is still great! This really should be the first book you read on paganism.
Finally an appropriate introductory book on paganism!!! July 28, 2008 Having been pagan for years I always let out a little sigh when I see yet another introductory book show up on the shelves at the bookstores. Generally, you can expect the same thing as the 853 other books that came before it. A cursory explaination of pagan gods, a little chart about the wheel of the year and holidays, and then some neat little spells and wand waving to make the reader feel like a "real witch". Said books are often under researched, trite, and repetative.
This book however, was one of the nicest surprises Ive had book-wise in quite a while. Its academic, I wouldnt be ashamed to hold this book out to someone and say "this is basically what I believe in" when one of my non-pagan friends finds out Im not christian. Its core focuses on spirituality, not magic, which is a very nice change of pace.
The book is good for group classes, comparative religion courses, those interested in becoming pagan or those just interested in learning about someone else's religion. Theres no intimidating wording. Anyone, of any faith, can learn something about themselves and the world with this book. It helps guide the reader through examining their own beliefes, where they came from, what they mean, do they limit or empower you, etc etc.
It presents paganism as an actual religion for you to study, and encourages you to look inside for your ideal of morals and beliefs. So many books out there focus all on nice little spells and insta-witch kits without mentioning any of the beliefs, soul searching, and reverence needed in a spiritual practice.
I wish this would be everyones ""first book"" instead of the insta-witch garbage that litters so many store shelves.
Book is Very Helpful and Informative May 20, 2008 This book does a great job of explaining many concepts, which before I was very skeptical of, in a logical way. It really helped my understanding and was a great introduction to Paganism. Voiced in a friendly and wise manner, this book would be great for anyone interested in becoming a Pagan or just learning about it.
Very Good, Especially for Beginners April 24, 2008 While books on Wicca and Rituals abound, Paganism: An Introduction to Earth-Centered Religions provides a unique source for Paganism in general. This book proves to be a good source for those just starting on the Pagan path, or those simply wanting to learn about Paganism.
The book is set up in a sort of workbook or textbook format, each chapter (and some sections) has activities and questions that prompt the reader to evaluate and build his/her beliefs. There are even sections for "if you are having trouble" for some of the deeper, more controversial topics, such as the concept of Satan.
What also makes this book unique is that it isn't a chapter or two on theology and then six chapters of Ritual. Instead, it looks at Paganism as a whole and covers beliefs, concepts, and activities in quite a bit of detail, taking more of a scientific or logical approach to help explain things like Magick and Deities. It is also, for the most part, an easy read. The authors do a very good job of putting everything into concepts (complete with diagrams) that the everyday reader can understand and grasp easily. Even the section that talks about magick in terms of theoretical physics is fairly easy to understand (even if the concepts themselves are difficult to wrap one's head around).
So while the more experienced Pagans may find this book mostly review, it is still a good one to add to anyone's library.
