Just for Beginners...but not really December 24, 2008 Let me begin by saying I have tremendous respect for Andy Stanley. I think he's quite possibly the most effective communicator on senior leadership that I know of. His talk on systems (given at the Catalyst Conference) and his book 7 Practices of Effective Ministry are absolutely jam-packed with deep, practical insight from a guy who is leading his organization more effectively than just about anyone I can think of.
However, in light of these things, the content in this book seemed a bit recycled and stale. This book might serve as a decent introducation to someone who has NEVER heard any general leadership wisdom, but to anyone who's familiar with this kind of literature, this book will quite possibly fail to offer a single thing that sounds fresh or exciting, though it's full of good reminders.
What bothered me most was this: This book has some very basic principles for leadership, and based on the title, seems to be aimed at young or emerging leaders, yet seems to assume throughout that the reader has a clearly defined organizational leadership role through which they might filter these leadership principles. As an emerging leader myself who leads only a small group and has informal leadership roles elsewhere in the church, I felt this tension pretty acutely.
The first and last chapters were my favorite (the first because of its excitement factor, and the last because of its sheer weight and importance), but the others left me wanting to skim through the whole thing. It all felt recycled to me. For something a little more engaging (at least for my personality type), I'd recommend Courageous Leadership by Hybels. And for something significantly more practical and original, read Andy's 7 Practices of Effective Ministry.
NGL - Fully loaded June 2, 2008 The Next Generation Leader is a great book. Andy has so much experience and insight. He writes to young leaders, encourages & challenges them, and calls them out. This book is a "easy read" but packed full of information and insight. It's good for individuals or groups.
next generation leader by Andy Stanley January 21, 2008 This book helps you focus on your leadership skills and self assess your strengths and weaknesses and what that means. It is easy to understand and applicable.
A Must Read for anyone in leadership September 24, 2007 This book helped me to stop and think about how I am getting my job done. Was I being efficient and effective? NO! After reading this book I began the process of examining more thorough exactly what my job was and how I went about getting it done. I have found that I get a lot more done now and don't find myself in a tailspin. Great Book!

Great little book on leadership September 1, 2007 This is a brief read on leadership. He highlights a few characteristics of leadership. The book is not a paradigm shifting book, but is a quick reminder of the need for futuristic leadership. Andy is a leader and a clear communicator. If you are looking for some easy advice on improving your leadership skills, this is a good book for you. You will be rewarded for your investment.
