"The Shack" is a breath of fresh air! William P. Young has woven a masterpiece; truly an adventure of the heart! This little book creatively challenged my assumptions and captivated my heart and mind. What an encouragement! Our family read it aloud and thoroughly enjoyed the journey together. A must read!

I was given this book by one of my home care patients. I read it over the course of one day. I couldnt leave it alone. Another reviewer posted that it portrayed GOD as an Aunt Jemima type. I guess that reviewer didnt read the same book that I did-or didnt get into the book as a work of fiction or something I dont know. The book portrayed GOD as the character in the book needed GOD to be portrayed at the given time. That wont make sense until you read the book. The Shack is a deep but easy read. It touches your soul and makes you think. It is not a true story. But a wonderfully told work of fiction that makes you wonder if it could be true. And then sit back knowingly after you have read it and think to yourself, "you know, I feel like this sometimes". So, in part it is true. You have to read this book. With all the law and judgment in todays world, a refreshing look at relationships and just pure and simple love puts joy in the heart.

This book is so far off base. God is presented as sort of a sweet happy joking Aunt Jemima type who's always cooking up somthing good in the kitchen and dishing out it-don't-make-no-never-mind platitudes. Jesus is the clumsy son who makes a mess in the kitchen and would rather lay out and contemplate the stars; and the Holy Spirit is portrayed as some sort of etherial female who spends the day in the garden sort of wafting by once in awhile. Everything's ok and I'm just tolerant of everything you little darlin. I kept turning pages trying to push myself through this saccharin and it just kept going and going and going. If you want a saccharin god then read away. If you want the God of the Bible, don't waste your money. If you want to find out why bad things happen to good people, read the Book of Job.

This book is powerful. Not only is it incredibly well-written, but it is realistic as well. It will blow all your preconceived notions about God, yourself, and Truth right out of the water. It is a powerful read with some great insight. I know that this is a book that will stay with me for a long time.
As I was reading this book, I felt like someone had either gotten into my head or my journal! I have struggled with so many of the same issues and questions as Mack does. In fact, I think that is one of the greatest strengths of this book. It doesn't shy away from the hard questions, honest emotion, and struggle. Best of all, this book avoids the simplistic answers that so many Christian books spout. This book does delve deeply into the issue of trusting God. But it's not in a "Trust God and have faith and all your problems will disappear just like that!"
I think every Christian should read this book. There is so much here to chew on and think about. I definitely intend to re-read this book. And I will most definitely recommend it to others.
If you are struggling with questions, doubt, anger with God, intense emotional pain or just frustration with life in general, do yourself a favor and read this book. You will be so glad you did.
